Amy Outlaw…One of the “Originals”

When Vivian B. Adams School opened it’s doors in 1971, it was the tangible result of community visionaries who saw the need for a facility dedicated to making life better for special needs individuals.  Sixty-five students were there for the beginning, of that group, six remain as idividuals served by VBAS.  One of those individuals is Amy Outlaw.

As publicity grew surrounding the opening of VBAS, Amy’s mother, Louise Outlaw was convinced this was the best placement for her young daughter.  According to Regina Espy, Amy’s sister, ” Mother stood with her conviction and enrolled Amy, Daddy was soon won over as Amy adapted well and saw how personally involved the teachers were both in and outside of the school setting.  VBAS was making a huge difference in Amy’s education,  especially in her speech.  She received individual speech therapy that made a remarkable difference in her communication skills.  VBAS has made a definite difference in Amy’s life as well in our family’s life.”

Regina, along with Amy’s siblings, Beverly Shirah, Vickie Outlaw and Rodney Outlaw continue to be a vital part of the VBAS family.

VBAS truly became a family affair for the Outlaws when Miss Louise joined the staff in the child nutrition program.

Through the years, Amy has been an ambassador for VBAS as she shared her talents through dance, playing the piano and singing.  She enjoys Special Olympics and all of the events hosted by VBAS for the individuals !
